Hardeman County's first Barter Day was held in Bolivar on Lafayette Street the first Monday in March 1933. Barter Day was also known as Big Monday Trade Day. Merchants co-operated with the County Extension Agent, U.R. Bond, to make Barter Day a success. Citizens brought produce, seed, wagons, mules, horses, plows, sorghum or a variety items for trade. All articles were exhibited on the Court Square except for live stock, which was traded on the property that the current Farmers Market is now located.
The present Farmers Market is an open-air, post-and-beam structure made of Douglas fir timbers.
