Artist Veda Reed

From the collection of Greg Campbell and Greg Baudoin

Reed attended Memphis College of Art in the early 1950's and has been an active presence in the local art scene ever since. She received the Tennessee Governor's Award in the Arts in 1996 and serves as Professor Emeritus at Memphis College of Art. Journeying regularly to her birthplace in the prairie region of Oklahoma, Reed is a keen observer of the effects of light and atmospheric conditions that appear there unlikely anywhere else. Of Sun Rays at Twilight she says "Sun-rays are a common sight on the prairie both at sunrise and sunset. Sometimes, as in this painting, the color of the sky can be quite dramatic due to atmospheric conditions elsewhere - such as ash from wildfires hundreds of miles away or other unknown or unseen events." Her handling of paint and exquisite treatment of light instill a feeling of transcendence as if one is in the presence of the sublime.
