MOTEL LOT
oil on canvas, 14x19
From the collection of Pat Mazzeo and Sandra Sarkela
Of her Motel Lot (2004), artist Susan Maakestad says "At the time I was painting the unnoticed marginal spaces in the urban landscape. This painting was painted from a snapshot I took in the parking lot of an interstate chain motel. I was attracted to the anonymity of the place and its transitory function. In the painting I wanted to connect emotionally to the banal landscape by elevating it into something alive and beautiful through the means of light and color. I long for the unobstructed view and its inherent sense of possibility just beyond the horizon." Maakestad is a professor of painting at the Memphis College of Art.
