Throughout his artistic development and travel abroad the experiences of watching birds in flight have provided a source of inspiration for Fred Burton. In numerous cultures birds are considered to be a spiritual connection between the heavens and the earth below. They are thought of as links to humans' mortality and provide metaphors for dealing with personal themes. Swallow-Tailed Kite #3 continues a long history of drawings, paintings and constructions exploring bird forms as links to Burton's life and memories. Burton is a professor of Memphis College of Art.
