Johnson's work possesses an ethereal quality redolent of the natural world, drawing inspiration from horticulture textbooks and old botanical encyclopedia illustrations. "By considering as many of the infinite aspects of nature as I can, I take claim to the micro and the macro, the metaphysical and the phenomenal." His paintings "layer organic life forms onto the surface with layers of china markers, graphite, oils and wax. The veiling of colors produces a dramatic field of depth, while floating compositions keep the piece light." He earned BFA and MFA degrees from the University of Memphis before teaching there.
